If you want a "kind of guitalin" effect without breaking the bank, the Mayfield Guitaluke might be your best bet. By collaborating with another builder out-of-state, we were able to bring you a much more economical solution. Kits provided by Mike Breedlove, we at Mayfield have converted these "trappy boxes" into a unique 5-string ukulele that will give you a timbre similar to the guitalin. While not a replacement for an authentic Mayfield guitalin, they are all personally assembled and converted by Nathan Smith, with bridges and nuts made by Nathan. Your choices of bridge woods include American Cherry, Ipe (Ironwood), Katalox (Mexican Ebony), Tigerwood (Goncalo Alves), Gaboon Ebony, Bolivian Rosewood, or Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba) - we will reach out after the sale regarding your preference. They feature a doubled, octave, 4th-position course (for that guitalin sound), the other strings being singles, as on a ukulele. They utilize a zero fret and a brass nut. Necks have been reinforced with an aluminum spine to handle the higher tension of the steel wires. The instrument can be tuned like a standard ukulele (with an octave double like the guitalin), or simply tuned like a guitalin - with fewer strings - and much easier to play. A finer-gauge string will be provided if a ukulele tuning is desired. Also included is a soft, zippered gig bag. Guitalin owners will find this a less stressful option for weekend gigs if not wanting to transport their precious guitalin, which can remain secure in the studio. Traditional shellac finish. Your choice of chrome or black hardware. Your choice of red wine "chicken head" knobs or basic brown. Pots control tone and volume.
